The Story of Big Boss

- Today son, I am going to tell you the story of Big Boss, a Legendary Soldier who had a life full of adventures.

- That's a strange name! Why did they call him that?

- You'll find out soon enough. Let's begin the story...
Once upon a time, there was a young kid named John but people used to call him Jack. Jack became a soldier at a very young age and, when he turned 15, he met a woman who they called "The Boss". She trained him to be the perfect soldier and what he learned influenced his entire life. Then, they both went their separate ways and Jack joined a unit called FOX to serve his country, the U.S.A.

In 1964, during the Cold War, Jack went on a mission in Russia to rescue a soviet scientist that wanted to join the U.S.A.  He took the name of Naked Snake and ventured into the jungle. Unfortunately, as he was about to complete his mission, he discovered that his former mentor, The Boss, had joined the enemy side, the Soviet Union, taking with her a very powerful weapon. She almost killed Naked Snake and escaped.

- She's mean! I don't like her!

- She was not that bad, you will understand very soon.
Snake recovered from his wounds and headed back to Russia, with the orders of killing The Boss and recovering the nuclear weapon she stole.  After long and fierce battles against the Cobra Unit, The Boss's trusted allies, Naked Snake faced his mentor. In a field of white flowers, he defeated her and killed her with her own gun. The Boss was dead, Naked Snake was now an American hero and was awarded the title of Big Boss for killing his old mentor.

- Well done! She deserved it!

- No son, the truth is much more complex. Snake discovered that The Boss's treason was planned by the U.S. all along. Her mission was to be killed by her student so she would take the blame for a nuclear attack the US were accused for.

- So she was a good person?

- She served her country till the end! So yes, we can say that her sacrifice made her a good person.Saddened by the news, Snake retired from the FOX unit, consumed by guilt.

- Is that the end of the story? What happened next?

- That's not over yet, son.  Few years later, in 1970, Big Boss joined a group named The Patriots, created by old allies and members of the FOX Unit. The goal of The Patriots was to fulfill The Boss's dream of a unified world. Unfortunately, Big Boss found that the direction taken by The Patriots was not right. He left the group and became a mercenary.

- He seems like a lonely person, Dad.

- Not that lonely, son. He soon met Kazuhira Miller, who he liked to call "Kaz", and he became his most trusted friend and ally. Big Boss then created his own military group called "Militaires Sans Frontières".

- What does that mean?

- In French, it means "Soldiers without Borders".  He wanted to help whoever needed support and he was soon approached by two people, Ramon Galvez Mena and Paz. Their country, Costa Rica, was in need of an army and Big Boss decided to help them and bring peace to the region.
During his mission, he met a child soldier, Chico, and together with his sister Amanda, they lead their guerrilla group to victory and saved the country.Big Boss was a hero, more than ever, leading the powerful "Militaires Sans Frontières" from their Mother Base.
- Is it finished already?

- No son, it's just the beginning of Big Boss' story but it's getting late and you need to sleep.

- But I want to know more, and I'm not even tired!

- You will soon know everything about the Legendary Soldier, I promise!

Silent Hill
10 reasons why the movie Silent Hill is a good film

In 2006, French director Christophe Gans released the cinematographic version of Silent Hill, one of the most terrifying video game series. Not particularly well received by the critics, we decided to take a look at this adaptation and give you ten reasons why the film Silent Hill is worth watching.

Spoiler Alert! Be warned!

1) Akira Yamaoka's soundtrack

:Half the pleasure of playing Silent Hill comes from the mesmerizing soundtrack of Akira Yamaoka. Using the same music for the movie was a smart move because, not only is it a pleasure for the senses, but it also allows the movie to offer an experience similar to its game counterpart.

2) The town: The foggy town of Silent Hill is a character on its own in the movie. The film does a perfect job at recreating the unique atmosphere of this empty town, consumed by darkness.

3) The locations: Part of the town and some locations visited by Rose in the movie are taken directly from the game and are also well recreated. If you are a fan of the games, you will really enjoy watching the heroine visiting the Silent Hill school where we all have such great/disturbing memories.

4) Pyramid Head: Even though you could argue on the presence of Pyramid Head without James Sunderland around, seeing Silent Hill's bogeyman in action is awesome. The chaotic movements of the creature, the metallic sound of the Great Knife scratching the ground: it's all there for our pleasure!

5) Radha Mitchell: Some won't appreciate that the main character is a woman but you can't deny that Radha Mitchell makes a convincing Silent Hill heroine.

6) The bestiary: The deformed and weird Silent Hill creatures had to be part of the film and a special mention goes to the Nurse and the Ash Children, particularly frightening.

7) The creepiness: Unlike other horror games that use the element of surprise to scare, the fear in Silent hill comes from the unknown and an unique atmosphere. The movie cleverly recreated the disturbing feeling and the creepy encounters that populate Silent Hill, such as the mutilated bodies found in the Otherworld.

8) The Otherworld: Speaking of the Otherworld, the transition from our reality to the world of darkness that characterizes the foggy town was particularly well-made. The walls decomposing like rotten flesh, then evaporating into thin air would be used in the Silent Hill games following the release of the movie (Homecoming in particular).

9) Sean Bean does not die: No bullets, no arrows or no decapitation this time. That's worth mentioning!

10) One of the best video game adaptations: Many have tried, many have failed. Making a good movie adaptation of a video game seems  to be a difficult task when you see the quality of what has been released. Watching a movie that stays true to its inspiration while being intelligent enough to be a good horror movie on its own is rare enough to be noticed.

If you would like to extend your cinematographic  Silent Hill experience, have a look at Jacob's Ladder directed by Adrian Lyne (the movie greatly inspired the Silent Hill franchise) and In the Mouth of Madness by John Carpenter: two sumptuous horror movies that explore madness and nightmares.

Silent Hill
Fear in Video Games - A Silent Hill Story
We all have memorable gaming moments that will remain with us forever: a surprise ending, a great character, a perfect soundtrack.

In my case, one of those moments was about fear and I will always remember my first Silent Hill 2 experience for a very specific scene that still frightens me.

I fell in love with horror games at a young age. It all started with the Lovecraftian Alone in the Dark and I then moved on to Resident Evil and its jumping-through-windows zombie dogs. Finally, I discovered Silent Hill.

I entered the foggy town for the first time with the demo that was included with my copy of Metal Gear Solid in 1998 on PlayStation. The unique atmosphere of the game, the hypnotizing soundtrack and the disturbing setting hooked me immediately and I bought the game as soon as it was out for a journey that changed me and transformed me into the gamer I am today. In 2001, Silent Hill 2 was released and it soon became my favourite game of all time.

Silent Hill 2 made quite an impression on me at the time and there is a particular scene that I will always remember as a pure moment of fear and terror.

As I was walking down the streets of Silent Hill as James Sunderland, looking for my wife, I entered Wood Side Apartments. The place was dark and full of deformed humanoid creatures that were also crawling through the town, so I decided to step into the darkness and start exploring for clues on where to find my loved one. While wandering the first floor of the building, I heard screams coming from one of the rooms. I walked along the endless corridor, my flashlight piercing through the dark. The radio started to emit static sound, the usual alert when those strange creatures were around. The noise was getting louder as I approached  a wall of bars blocking my way.On the other side, in a glowing red light, a tall humanoid figure was standing, still and silent. What should have been a head was replaced by an imposing pyramidal-shaped helmet. I could see the creature breathing but that was all, it didn't move. The buzzing noise from the radio, the darkness surrounding me, the inexplicable  presence of this man and the menace coming from his strong body really frightened me and, even though the bars were separating me from the man, his disturbing aura was too much to bare. I entered the closest door to escape but it was only the beginning of my nightmare.

This part, the first encounter with Pyramid Head, will haunt me forever. It may have lasted just a few seconds but the fear and the unpleasant feeling coming from the creature and the apartments plunged in darkness was really overwhelming. This specific scene became even more frightening after discovering the true nature of Pyramid Head. If we take in consideration the fact/theory that Silent Hill's bogeyman is the personification of James Sunderland's  repressed feelings such as guilt, sexual frustration and anger, this first encountered is about James facing a dark version of himself, the wall of bars acting as some kind of mirror revealing the true nature of people. I have played Silent Hill 2 at least a dozen times since then and the same feeling of stress and fear remains when exploring the dark hallway of Wood Side Apartments.

We are eager to know what was the scariest gaming moment in your life so don't hesitate to share your experience with us on our KONAMI Europe Facebook page.

Castlevania
Castlevania's most gruesome bosses
For over 26 years, the Castlevania series has offered us one of the most diverse and unique bestiaries in the history of video games.

Because it's Halloween and we would like to celebrate the best creatures and monsters from our vampire franchise, here is our selection of the most gruesome bosses encountered by the Belmont clan and other protagonists.

Legion: Picture a gigantic sphere made of human bodies and you'll get one of the most disgusting and recurring bosses in Castlevania.  Spawning endless hordes of those corpses to attack you, Legion has a core consisting of a tentacular creature firing lasers. How creepy (and awesome) is that?

Beelzebub: Called "Lord of Flies", Beelzebub is a giant rotting corpse hanged on the ceiling by chains. The danger comes from all the buzzing insects flying around the body and attacking you to defend their master. The more you hit Beelzebub, the more parts of his body will fall down but at the same time more flies will appear and attack you! Be aware of this and aim for the head!

Gergoth: Introduced in Dawn of Sorrow, Gergoth looks like a bipedal dinosaur with no tail and rotting flesh under a very sick looking skin. Firing lasers from his mouth, Gergoth also likes to stomp things, especially you!

Gravedigger: Working for the Necromancers in Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, Gravedigger is a big guy charged with burning the corpses of the dead in the Fire Crematory. With a design a la Pyramid head, Gravedigger cleverly hides four tentacles under his helmet.

Maneater: Boss in Order of Ecclesia, Maneater is a giant worm that inhabits a multi-faced skull flying around a room mostly made of bones. Like many other bosses, Maneater likes to shoot lasers and throw bouncing bones. He also enjoys long walks by the cemetery and a light Belmont dinner in the evening.

Medusa: The famous snake-woman has appeared in most of the Castlevania games and the Lament of Innocence version looks particularly frightening. Just imagine a giant Medusa head floating in the air with the usual snakes as hair and the petrifying gaze.

Menace: Final boss of Dawn of Sorrow, Menace is the combination of numerous demons' souls and emerges from the body of the poor Dmitrii Blinov. With four humanoid heads displayed on its giant body, it materialises as a golem made of bones and flesh.

Carmilla/Camilla: Recurring character in Castlevania, Carmilla is a vampire that can transform herself into strange monsters. Her transformation in Circle of Moon is a succubus, a sexy winged female demon, laying on a flying skull firing lasers from her mouth.

Forgotten One: Trapped in the Prison of Eternal Torture, the Forgotten One might be one of the biggest bosses encountered in the Castlevania series. Chained to the ceiling of the prison, the creature is a skinless demon whose body has been cut in half and  who spills blood from its body to poison Leon Belmont. To add to the creepiness, hordes of maggots  fall from the rotting flesh of the demon to defend their "master".

Puppet Master: Simply enough, Puppet Master is the puppet of a giant humanoid head with sharp teeth and four arms hanged from the ceiling with strings. Its deadliest attack consists of summoning a puppet, trapping it in an iron maiden and switching its place with you to deal to your character massive damage.

So this was our list! Do you agree with our choices? Which ones do you think should have been included? Leave a comment or head over to our official Facebook page to let us know!

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2: Dave Cox Twitter Interview at gamescom

During gamescom 2013, our European Community Manager Su had the pleasure to sit down with Dave Cox, Producer of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 and ask him all the questions you tweeted us about the Lords of Shadow saga and the upcoming CVLOS2.

For those who missed the live Twitter interview, you can now read the entire discussion right here:

  1. @CormacLennon: Is Drac's Blood Whip actually made of his own blood? Because wailing on peeps with your own solidified blood is badass.
Dave Cox: Yes, it is an extension of his own blood.

  2. @CormacLennon: Did you have any say in the combat animations? If so, what move can we say "That's a Dave Cox right there"
D.C: Rising Strike the Dragon Punch is a Dave Cox move

  3. @AceAshun: Will there be any playable characters/costume change DLC in the near future for CLOS2?
D.C: In the main game there are no other playable characters. You only play as Dracula.

  4. @J_Danieru: Do you think that the LoS saga is gonna be your artistic masterpiece? I mean the game is pure art in all aspects.
D.C:  We want to leave a mark on the series that people talk about for a very long time. The goal is to make one of the last, great, current gen titles.

  5. @VegaManX4: Will we ever see an art book for the Lords of Shadow Series? I'll buy it at a high price!
D.C: we are looking at this possibility and would love to have an art book too.

  6. @The_BAAD_Man: CLOS's soundtrack surprised me as it wasn't as upbeat as earlier installments in the series. Will CLOS2 have the same style?
D.C: Yes, because the music fits the universe that we have created.

  7. @archaven: Does CLOS2 support 2560 x 1600 or even 4K res?
D.C:  You can up res the game, depending on your graphic card, we won't be limiting the resolution.

  8. @Fuji_F: What would you do if you became immortal like Dracula?
    D.C: Make video games forever!

  9. @diobrando19: Will there be a re-release of CLOS1 that includes all the DLC?
D.C: Yes, this has been announced. It will be part of the Castlevania: Lords of Shadow Collection

  10. @diobrando19: Regarding the last Belmont at the end of the trailer, is he Richter or Victor Belmont?
D.C: He is Victor Belmont, a nod to the cancelled Dreamcast game.

  11. @diobrando19: Will Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate feature new HD cut-scenes (instead of cell shaded ones)?
D.C: The cell shaded look remains, but it is in HD quality and the characters are lip-synched

  12. @munozarmando214: Will CLOS2 support stereoscopic 3D?
    D.C: CLOS2 won't support stereoscopic 3D

  13. @elCesar41: Will Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate HD be a physical version, or only for download?
D.C: MoF HD will be download only

  14. @IamtheDracul: will the CLOS2 demo that comes with the CLOS Collection be the same as the one from E3?
D.C: Same demo but more polished and final quality

  15. @archaven: Does CLOS2 for PC have mouse support?
D.C: It does have mouse support

  16. @Alex_RN: is there any chance we'll hear new renditions to classic CV tunes from the past, in Lords of Shadow 2?
D.C: You will hear certain themes, not whole tunes.

  17. @ParodiSu: Can you give us some detail on the depth of combat?
D.C:  it is much deeper than CLOS1 , there are two additional weapons, we have the mastery system, relics and secondary weapons that support the main combat abilities, plus the focus system is still intact. Enemies are designed around  these move sets and items. So, some have weaknesses against certain weapons, like the Chaos Claws. In CLOS2, we designed the enemies around the combat system.

  18. @ParodiSu: What do you think makes Dracula such a popular character in pop culture?
D.C:  I think that Myths and Legends are something we all grow up with, they permeate our formative years and when we grow up, they stay with us. Dracula is such a powerful myth and character; that is why he is so memorable. Our Dracula is going to be a lot different to what people are thinking; more shades of grey than the typical Hammer Dracula, who is more black and white. We want to portray Dracula as an everyday-man, so people can identify with him.

  19. @ParodiSu: What real world locations have inspired the CLOS environment?
D.C: A lot of European cities; we wanted to create a city that had old and new together so it fits the Castlevania universe. So we had cobbled stoned streets, stained glass windows and towers, but there would also be neon and what you would see in modern cities. Places like Madrid, Budapest, those cities have the old and the new sitting comfortably together. So the city in Castlevania is very much like those cities, there's a real old European feel to it.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 will be available on February 27th in Europe and 28th in the UK on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC.
